For the first few decades of my life, breakfast made me feel miserable. I kept eating it anyway, because as they say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.”
What I didn’t know is that in the last half century, breakfast has actually become the most unhealthy meal of the day--largely because of the very phrase above.
Breakfast has become so unhealthy that it’s one of the biggest reasons we gain weight and get out of shape. By that same notion, changing what you eat for breakfast can lead to incredible results.
In fact, by changing what I ate for breakfast--and nothing else--I was able to achieve the results below in less than 90 days.
The Typical Breakfast – Your Day's Most Unhealthy Meal
But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me tell you what my day used to be like and how I changed it to get the results seen above in less than 90 days.
What My Day Used to Be Like
I always heard my mom’s voice in the back of my head saying “Don’t forget to eat breakfast! It’s the most important meal of the day,” so I always made it a point to eat something in the morning.
At 7am, I would have eat a typical American breakfast--cereal and milk, or maybe a bagel with cream cheese.
By 11am, my stomach started growling. Now feeling voracious, I fixated on lunch and started watching the clock. When it was time to eat an hour later, I’d usually get fast food. I knew it wasn’t healthy, but hangry me didn’t care.
After eating lunch, I was tired. And uncomfortably full. All I could think about until the end of the work day was taking a nap. Exhausted by the end of the work day, I abandoned my gym plans and went home.

How the Breakfast Industry Corrupted Breakfast and Made Us Fat
If "meal abuse" were a thing, then breakfast is the most abused meal of the day.
That wasn’t always the case. Up until modern day, breakfast was truly a healthy meal. Historical evidence shows us that Roman soldiers cooked a plant-based breakfast upon waking.
This continued for thousands of years. People, who worked laborious jobs until modern day, relied on breakfast to give them the energy they needed in the morning.
Then, in the late 1800s, someone named Dr. John Harvey Kellogg came along. Dr. Kellogg, a medical doctor and nutritionist, created the first American cereal, a nutritious and healthy plant-based meal.
If that name sounds familiar, it should. Dr. Kellogg’s started The Kellogg Company, which went on to revolutionize the way that Americans ate breakfast. Yep, the same Kellogg that pushes pop tarts and other desserts to kids as breakfast foods, once started out making healthy plant-based breakfasts.
Dr. Kellogg was a brilliant scientist and doctor. He was one of the first proponents of the idea that germs are what cause disease, owned four patents, and was a leading expert in nutrition at the time. He originally founded the Kellogg Company as a health food company with a focus his on patient’s health.
But by the time he passed away in 1951, the company he created developed another expertise outside of medicine or nutrition--marketing.
They were so good at marketing, in fact, that they created an ad campaign with the slogan "breakfast is the most important deal of the day."
Yes, most people hear that phrase repeated again and again, thinking that it was some health mantra created by some body of nutrition experts or medical doctors. In fact, they were just words in a marketing campaign.
And brilliant words they were. People became aware--concerned even--about the fact that they had to eat breakfast. They had actually became so concerned with eating breakfast that they didn’t think about what they had to eat.
The breakfast industry, of course, took advantage of this fact. Breakfasts slowly started to look like desserts as Americans consumed more and more sugar.
And this is how breakfast went from the most important meal of the day to the most abused meal of the day.
When you eat a bad breakfast in the morning, it creates a domino effect through the day.
Eating an unhealthy breakfast leaves you so hungry for lunch that you’re likely to make bad choices. After eating an unhealthy lunch, you’re sluggish for the rest of the day and unlikely to stick to an exercise routine or partake in vigorous activity in the evening.
By the time dinner rolls around, being healthy is the last thing on your mind.

As a serial entrepreneur, I’m used to finding problems and dogging them to death until they’re solved. This was no different. I knew I needed a breakfast that’s:
I began experimenting with a few formulas and used myself as a test subject. Soon, I was full of energy and dropping waist sizes. Friends commented that I looked healthier and wanted to try my shakes.
How did we find the Complete Start formula?

Wheat contains gluten--a substance that’s incredibly difficult to digest. Amaranth on the other hand is a much healthier alternative. Not only is it gluten free and contains many more micronutrients, it contains more easily digestible protein as well.
Pillar 2: "Pulverized" Vegetables
Everyone knows that vegetables are healthy and can be superfoods in their own right.
Ever wonder why we don’t eat them more for breakfast?
It’s because they’re slow to digest. Frankly, it isn’t pleasant to feel like you have a rock in your stomach at 8am in the morning.
So we took fresh organic vegetables and added a novel twist. We freeze-dried and pulverized them. Suddenly, I was able to comfortably eat a salad for the first time in my life.
Pillar 3: Pea Protein
This one actually took a few tries. We knew that we wanted an additional protein source. The question was--from what?
We tried a few different options. Animal-based proteins like whey, milk, and egg proteins either ended up making us feel too “bloated” or were too allergenic.
We then switched to plant based proteins. While they were easier on the stomach, we realized that some were incomplete protein sources or tasted downright wrong.
Then we stumbled on pea protein. It was a complete protein and, believe it or not, downright delicious (you couldn’t taste the pea-ness at all).
The above is a quick summary. In reality, the process was incredibly long, but we didn’t want to bore you to death because we could have written a book on our entire formula (which we may do at some later point).
We ended up with a product that we can proudly say makes breakfast healthy again.
